Artificial Intelligence Job Market Trends | New 2024 Study

artificial-intelligence-job-market-trends

There are a lot of questions that arise after the rise of generative AI technology and AI tools like chatGPT. This includes questions like:

  • Will AI affect my job role?
  • How many jobs will be created because of AI?
  • Is there enough job demands with skilled AI professionals?
  • And so on…

To understand the current state of the Artificial Intelligence job market, we analyzed 22,087 job positions via portals such as Glassdoor, salary.com, etc.

Let’s dive into the findings.

Key highlights of the study

  1. 90.7% of job roles available in the artificial intelligence industry are full-time.
  2. The average annual salary in the AI industry is $75,000 in the USA.
  3. San Francisco comes out on top with 807 AI jobs available, making up 14.37% of all available jobs.
  4. Accenture is the leading US company with the most AI job openings, currently having about 33,000 AI job openings (October, 2023).
  5. 46% of office and administrative support jobs are exposed to automation by AI in the US.
  6. Around 300 million full-time jobs worldwide are at risk of exposure to automation by generative AI.
  7. Most AI jobs need mid-level experience, with 51.85% of jobs requiring it.
  8. Activities comprising 30% of work hours in the US can be automated by 2030, with generative AI playing a significant role in automation.

What are the types of job roles available in AI?

types-of-ai-job-availability

90.7% of job roles available in the artificial intelligence industry are full-time. We analyzed 20,833 jobs, out of which 18,894 were full-time. Then, there are 1059 part-time roles, which is equivalent to 5.1%. Other types of job roles include contract (3.2%), temporary (0.5%), and internships (0.3%).

Most jobs available in the AI industry are full-time, and there are not many internship opportunities available for freshers. It also indicates that businesses in the AI industry are taking their work more seriously as they are only seeking full-time resources. There were only 81 internship positions available. It could mean that as a fresher, you might have a hard time finding opportunities to learn.

We have gone through some of these jobs on various portals and found that usually, part-time roles are AI and ML trainers and several internship opportunities. These roles are well-paid considering they are part-time and also provide learning opportunities.

On the other hand, full-time roles include robotic scientists, AI product managers, machine learning engineers, data scientists, and deep learning engineers. Full-time roles require more experience and qualifications in the AI industry.

Are there remote jobs available for artificial intelligence?

ai-remote-jobs

Nowadays, after the impact of COVID-19, there is a significant surge in the demand for work-from-home opportunities. As a leading resume-writing service provider, we have also noticed a substantial increase in clients applying for remote work.

Unlike before COVID-19, there is now a widespread demand across various fields, with everyone keen to explore the possibility of remote work. So yes, remote jobs are available in the AI industry. However, their numbers are significantly lower compared to on-site jobs. Out of the 27,633 jobs we analyzed, only 5,546 were remote, which is equal to 20.07%.

On the other hand, 71.66% of jobs are on-site. And only 8.20% are hybrid. AI companies are not entertaining the hybrid working model. As AI requires constant training and development, they are sticking to the on-site work culture, as data suggests.

In the AI industry, employees cannot expect to find remote jobs easily. AI is a field that requires constant interaction and team collaboration. Hence, employers can also focus on fostering a culture of teamwork.

What is the average salary range of AI jobs in the US?

salary-of-ai-jobs

For this, we analyzed 41,504 jobs and found that the average annual salary in the AI industry is $75,000 in the USA. 50% of jobs fall into this category. Then, 11.2% (4,648) jobs have a salary range of $140,000-$170,000. There are 4,488 (10.8%) jobs paying more than $170,000

These numbers indicate that businesses are willing to invest in good AI resources. The average annual salary might not look much. However, high-paying opportunities are still available if you are an artificial intelligence expert.

We specialize in C-suite resume writing, working closely with high-level executives to craft tailored resumes. In our conversations with these leaders, we gain valuable insights into AI job opportunities.

Recently, while discussing a resume with an AI engineer, he expressed a vision for the future, foreseeing a scenario where it becomes commonplace to have a dedicated professional overseeing the AI department in every company.

What is the average annual salary of AI jobs by region?

salary-range-of-ai-jobs-by-regions

We analyzed 30 states and calculated the average annual salary in the US for an AI job is $139,496. Delaware has the highest average salary at $205,000. On the other hand, Wisconsin has a minimum average wage of $50,014 in our list.

However, most US states show an average salary between $100,000-$200,000. The second-highest average salary for an AI job is in New York at $190,000, and Washington is at the third spot with $167,000.

The AI industry showcases a promising career with such high annual packages. A Forbes’s report suggests that the overall average salary in the US is just $59,428. Even in the IT industry, the annual salary is averaged at $70,116. This data suggests that the AI industry is a good career option in terms of annual income.

Which top US companies are hiring in AI?

Accenture is the leading US company with the most AI jobs. It currently has about 33,000 AI job openings. We have the US Department of Veterans Affairs at the second spot with 6100 openings. IBM is the third company with the most AI jobs in the market.

Top Job Locations in the US by Number of Available AI Jobs

locations-of-ai-jobs-availability

After analyzing 5,616 jobs in cities with the most AI jobs, San Francisco comes out on the top. 807 AI jobs are available in San Francisco, which make up 14.37% of all available jobs. New York and Washington DC secure the second and third spot with 12.50% and 11.34% jobs.

The rest of the cities have less than 10% jobs with not too much difference. Boston got the bottom spot on the list with 458 jobs, i.e., 8.16%. However, anyone searching for an AI job can move to any of these locations for better chances.

Number of available AI jobs by experience in the US 2024

available-ai-jobs-by-experience-us

We carefully studied 22,807 AI jobs that require various experience levels and found that most AI jobs need mid-level experience. 11,825 jobs require you to have mid-level experience, equal to 51.85% (more than half). The AI industry does not show much scope for people with little to no experience. Only 118 jobs (0.52%) are available for people with no experience.

Even entry-level jobs only comprise 21.84% of the total jobs. On the other hand, there are 5,882 senior-level jobs, i.e., 25.79%. All the data so far proves that the AI industry hires experienced professionals and there’s very little demand for freshers or interns.

How many jobs will disappear because of AI?

Since the rise of tools like ChatGPT by OpenAI, there have been speculations that most of the jobs will be replaced by AI. How much weight does this statement hold?

AI has no doubt the capability to automate a number of tasks. And some entry-level jobs can be expected to be replaced by AI. As per studies, 46% of office and administrative support jobs are exposed to automation by AI in the US. Legal jobs are also likely to be affected by AI as 44% of them will be exposed. Similarly, 37% of architecture and engineering jobs are exposed.

  • Entry-level writers and proofreaders

AI tools like ChatGPT are good for basic writing and proofreading. Anyone who used them will argue that they provide better output than entry-level writers and proofreaders.

  • Entry-level programming and web/app development jobs

ChatGPT is already being used to create basic plugins and Chrome extensions. It can also write code for web and app development. It is not there yet but it certainly performs better when you compare it with entry-level programming and development jobs.

  • Entry-level HR roles

AI tools have automated the tasks of going through thousands of applications and shortlisting candidates based on specific merits. These tools can also perform basic tasks like answering candidates’ common queries and processing payroll data.

We are not suggesting that AI will eliminate HR manager jobs, as it is an important role that requires a human physical presence in a company.

However, basic activities, such as sending emails and simple reminders or replies, can be efficiently handled by AI.If someone is hiring an HR professional solely for these basic tasks, it is worth considering that AI can now perform these functions

  • Customer servicing roles where customer-facing is not required

AI can receive calls and resolve queries with proper training. However, it is only suitable in a situation where a user only has to ask a specific question or perform a specific task like making a reservation or cancelling a booking.

  • Entry-level graphic designing roles

AI tools like Midjourney and DALL.E provide stunning graphics and even create logos and branding elements for a business. These tools are already proven to create better graphics than amateur graphic designers.

According to a report by Challenger, Gray & Christmas (a tech outplacement firm), 5% of job cuts in May happened due to AI. All these jobs were in the tech industry.

Similarly, tech giant IBM announced it paused hiring for entry-level HR and telemarketing positions to utilize AI for such roles.

In other news, Chegg (an ed-tech company helping with homework) announced laying off 4% of the workforce to work on AI strategies. As students have quickly adopted ChatGPT to help with their assignments and homework, the tech company had to introduce its own AI-powered education platform to rival OpenAI’s tool.

What jobs are created due to AI?

AI is not just taking jobs by bringing automation to various departments. It is also creating new ones. As the scope of AI is expanding, new jobs have emerged in different industries to enhance its efficiency.

77% of businesses have already started exploring AI with most of them using it. This will create requirements to have AI trainers and instructors in organizations to train their staff.

In the healthcare industry, AI is expected to create around 1 million jobs. Big brands like Google and Uber are investing heavily in self-driving AI cars and these could create more opportunities as these new vehicles will launch in the market.

After careful analysis and research, we found these five jobs that have emerged due to AI:

1. AI Prompt Engineer

It is one of the most talked about roles in the AI industry right now. An AI prompt engineer utilizes generative AI to perform various activities, such as content creation or code generation. This job emerged as organizations need to adopt AI in their daily operations and automate certain tasks.

A prompt engineer inputs various text instructions to enhance the output provided by the generative AI. You don’t need coding knowledge to become an AI engineer.

2. AI Instructors

Organizations have started adopting AI in their day-to-day operations. Soon, they will need to educate their employees on how to use various AI tools. This will open doors for a new job role – AI instructor.

An AI instructor will teach employees how to utilize artificial intelligence to enhance productivity and automate several tasks. The primary role of AI instructors will be to train employees to work collaboratively with AI and maximize their potential.

3. AI Content Creator

Large language models need content for training and to be able to generate human-like content. However, most of the present content is quite repetitive, and the rest is copyright-protected.

To train and improve generative AI, there will be a growing demand for writers and creators who can produce creative, unique, and attention-grabbing content. This kind of content will be required to train AI to generate high-quality and human-like content.

4. AI Trainers

AI is on the path to becoming an integral part of any organization. To make AI usage more effective, organizations would need AI trainers to train the systems and help them deliver the desired output.

These trainers would feed large chunks of data to AI systems and train them to generate accurate outcomes for specific activities.

5. AI Ethicists

The role of AI ethicists is to ensure that the usage of artificial intelligence will remain ethical and unbiased. To achieve this, AI ethicists will create specific guidelines for AI systems and ensure their adherence.

AI poses certain risks to privacy and copyright infringement. AI ethicists must ensure such risks are eliminated, and AI must align with societal values, exercising fairness across all departments. One such example could be to remain unbiased while shortlisting candidates for a job interview.

How many jobs globally could generative AI potentially automate?

ai potential

Around 300 million full-time jobs worldwide are at risk of exposure to automation by generative AI. The data suggests that AI can be used as a substitute for 25% of the current jobs. It can also affect 2/3rd of all jobs by exposing them to some form of automation. It may not completely eliminate these jobs, but employees would have to learn to use AI in their daily activities.

What percentage of US work hours might be automated by 2030, and what role does generative AI play?

The research suggests that activities comprising 30% of work hours in the US can be automated by 2030. Generative AI is going to play a significant role in the automation of such activities.

Usually, customer support, data entry, food servicing, accounting, and similar jobs will take a significant hit due to automation. Other fields like legal, creative, STEM, and developers will keep working in collaboration with AI.

How will work hours change by 2030 with and without generative AI, and what does it mean for the workforce?

Generative AI can be used for a large number of applications in multiple departments. Without implementing generative AI, automation is likely to affect 21.5% of work hours by 2030.

However, implementing generative AI for activities like product design, writing codes, creating marketing strategies, generating content, reviewing documents, and providing customer service with chatbots will increase the share to 29.5% of work hours.
